| Artistic Masterpiece in Palma cathedral

Mallorcan artist Miguel Barcelo recently restored the Santisimo chapel in Palma cathedral. Of international renown, Barcelo has created an unusual and inspiring biblical mural representing the loaves and fishes. Palma Cathedral now has another feature which adds to its reputation as one of most artistic and splendid Gothic churches in the Mediterranean.
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain inaugurated the Santisimo Chapel on February 2 marking the end of seven years hard work. Over 3,000 kilos of clay were used by Barcelo to create his 300 square metre, 14 metre high handcrafted mural. After having to mould so much clay, Barcelo finished the piece with sore knuckles; but the special technique he used has given the chapel his personal touch.
Within the chapel, Barcelo has designed five 12 metre-high windows of different tones ranging from grey to blue. Depending on the time of day, the outside light creates an illusion of the sea. The furniture has been crafted out of stone from the Binissalem quarries for Mass, which was a personal donation by the artist.
The chapel is Mallorcas new artistic symbol and is a major draw for residents and tourists. 3,000 visitors queued up to visit the chapel during its opening, a reflection of the importance of this work of art.
Barcelo is now in preparation to restore the dome of the United Nations building in Geneva. This is another massive undertaking which will require him to paint an area of over 1,000 square metres. The chapel has already been described as the Sistine Chapel of the 21st century. | |
